What should I pack for my Alaskan Vacation?

One of the most common questions we hear from guests planning a trip to Seward is: "What should I pack for Alaska?"

The short answer? Layers, layers, and more layers.

Unlike many vacation destinations, Alaska's weather can change throughout the day. A cool morning may turn into a sunny afternoon before a misty evening rolls in. Locals have learned to dress for flexibility, which is why you'll often see us peeling layers on and off throughout the day.

For outdoor activities, we recommend moisture-wicking, breathable clothing as your base layer. Add a fleece or lightweight insulating layer, and top it off with a light rain jacket. This combination will keep you comfortable whether you're hiking, wildlife viewing, kayaking, or exploring town.

Footwear matters, too. Waterproof hiking shoes or boots are a great investment for your trip. Trails can be muddy, docks can be wet, and you'll appreciate dry feet. Around here, many locals look like walking advertisements for Eddie Bauer and XTRATUF boots—and for good reason.

When it comes to dining out, don't overpack fancy clothes. Seward is wonderfully casual. Jeans and a nice shirt will fit in at virtually every restaurant in town. Alaska tends to value comfort over fashion.

One surprise for visitors is that Alaska can feel chilly indoors compared to warmer climates. We keep our guest rooms and common areas around 68 degrees, which most locals find comfortable. Air conditioning is practically nonexistent here because we simply don't need it. In Alaska, air conditioning is called "opening a window."

What Is the Weather Like?

Here's a general look at average temperatures and rainfall in Seward:

  • May: High 52°F / Low 40°F, about 4 inches of precipitation

  • June: High 58°F / Low 47°F, about 4 inches of precipitation

  • July: High 62°F / Low 51°F, about 6 inches of precipitation

  • August: High 61°F / Low 50°F, about 8 inches of precipitation

  • September: High 55°F / Low 45°F, about 9 inches of precipitation

Before you panic at the sight of rain in the forecast, there's something important to know: rain appears in Seward's forecast almost every day.

The forecast alone doesn't tell the whole story. Instead, pay attention to the expected rainfall amount. A forecast showing rain may simply mean a light drizzle, scattered showers, mist, or low clouds passing through for part of the day. Those conditions rarely stop Alaskans from getting outside and enjoying everything the area has to offer.

Of course, sometimes it does pour—but that's part of the adventure, too. With the right layers and a good rain jacket, you'll be prepared for whatever Alaska decides to throw your way.

Pack smart, embrace the weather, and remember: some of the most beautiful days in Seward start with a little rain.
